In this painting the landscape is seen as the birth mother of the new day. The Puhutukawa tree with its beautiful form, along with its lovely flowers is a great inspiration when representing the New Zealand coastal landscape. If you are familiar with the Moari legend of creation you may notice the subtle hints to the soft warm Papatuanuku and her loving bosom still rising up in hope to meet Ranginui once again.

I love this small gestural painting. I did it at a night class at Mairangi Arts Centre with Lance O’Gorman. I hope to work more in this style in the future.

All Alone

She is having dinner all alone. Is she sad or content? Do we sense a somewhat melancholic mood? The heavy copper chandelier could be a symbol for her sombre mood or all her troubles weighing heavy on her mind. Is that her lover sailing away on his/her yacht or her ignorance drifting away?

Or perhaps she is just waiting for her lover and not impressed with one of the menu choices and likes orange hair…
